Reflection On This Semester

Upon reflecting, I think we did a lot of good this semester. This was by far the most rewarding class I have taken at PC. There was a lot of hard work and definitely exiting from my comfort zone. But overall, I have learned a lot about myself through this class. If I don’t take anything away from college, I will always remember that you can do anything with the right mindset. From doing the work we did this semester I have learned that anything is possible if you’re in the right mindset.

Thank you Tom and Maria for giving us the ‘rare’ opportunity to learn something about ourselves and giving us the chance to really make a difference. Besides the learning, we were all able to make a difference this semester and that’s what this class is all about. Thank you to my class for making this experience so rewarding as well as a fun time as well. And lastly, thank you to my teammates from helping children. Without you guys our success would not have been possible and our impact on Childrens Wishes would not have been the same.

I’ll be honest, I’m going to miss blogging because it has become such a habit throughout the semester.

This class offers you something that probably no other class offers you. The humbling experience of actually learning about yourself and making a difference while you do it. Helping Childrens Wises this semester has been one of the most gratifying experiences  have ever had. Ronald Regan once said, “We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.” I think all of us were able to help someone this semester and that is a rare experience when taking a college course. Finally, I know when I started this semester I had no idea that I was going to make a difference in the way that we did. I also had no idea I was going to change the way I look at every obstacle I come across in life. But overcoming those challenges and getting in the right mindset is a learning experience I will always carry with me from this course.  No one put this better than Theodore Roosevelt who once said, “Believe that you can and you’re halfway there.”

Event Completed Updated “What We’ve Raised Page”

Our event has come and gone and we thought yesterday was a great success! It was great to finally see our hard work go into action and finally realize the fruits of our labor over the entire semester! After our event we have made $1005! That has brought us to a grand total of $3,330.73 donated to Children’s Wishes this semester. It was a great feeling finally handing all that money over to Dana and Children’s Wishes and we were really happy with the outcome of our event. More details to come.

Check out the final “What We’ve Raised Page” to see a full breakdown of our progress throughout the semester!

What We’ve Raised Link

Money Collected!

We are excited to announce that our PF Changs event went better than we had planned. We raised $123.23! After leaving we thought that this was not going to do well, but we were pleasantly surprised to hear that PF Changs had donated that money to Childrens Wishes on our behalf. Our grand total now is $2,325.73!

We have updated our “What We’ve Raised Page”, click the link below to see our progress! We are very excited for our main event this Sunday at Meadowbrook lanes!

What We’ve Raised Link

Learning From PF Changs Event

Today we were trying to push our event at PF Changs. We had the coupons that people would have to give to their waiters after dinner to get a portion of their dinner donated to Childrens Wishes. Our game plan was to hand coupons to people as they walked in that way they would use them immediately. The idea was great, but obstacles that we could not see were going to come up later that day.

We split the day up into shifts. PF Changs was going to donate portions of checks from 11AM-10PM. My shift was first from 12-3 and upon arrival I started to put up as many flyers as I could all over the outside of the mall. As I was putting up flyers about 5 people asked me about the event and I was thrilled because this area has so much human traffic. After putting up the flyers I started handing out coupons. To my dismay, the manager of PF Changs told me I could not hand out coupons in the mall as well as hand outing flyers. I was then forced to go outside and give coupons to people on the street, but I had no idea if they were actually going into PF Changs. It turned out that none of the people I handed the coupons to went to PF Changs that day.

I decided to hang a few more flyers, adding to the 30 I had already put up in the area. At this point I was confronted by a mall security officer who said I was on private property and there was no way that I could put up these flyers. He added that they would fine us and force us to take them down. He then pointed me in the direction of the security office where I could speak with the head of security. My initial instinct was to run, but I decided to walk in the direction of the office. I waited till he was out of sight and then I sprinted to my car.

Within minutes back on campus I received a text from Liz saying that the head of security called her regarding my flyers. I thought that being that these flyers were for a charity, they would feel bad taking them down. But when Liz went for her shift at 5 there were no flyers left.

Both Pat and Liz had a similar experience to my own and we did not make as much money as we hoped from the whole endeavor.

Overall, the day did not go as planned. But we tried and hopefully we can get more flyers and advertising up in other places besides the mall. One piece of advice: DON’T GO TO THE MALL TO DO ANYTHING FOR YOUR EVENT! Good luck to those doing their events this week. Be sure to spread the word about our event this Sunday!

Group Meeting and Updated “What We’ve Raised Page”

Today we met to create a schedule for the following week. Our event is scheduled for this Sunday, so we are definitely feeling a sense of urgency. We are planing on taking shifts outside P.F. Changs on Wednesday handing out flyers/coupons for our event. People who use our coupons at P.F. Changs for dinner Wednesday night will have 20% of their bill donated directly to Childrens Wishes.

We are planning on getting final decorations and other supplies for our event on Friday and Saturday. We are also planning on making our own sponsor board, so supplies for that will need to be purchased as well.

Finally, Liz was able to secure $85 of pure donations to Childrens Wishes so our “What We’ve Raised” page has been updated to reflect a total amount of $2,202.50 donated to Childrens Wishes thus far. We are very excited about our event coming up this week and can’t wait to finally see the results of our labor over the entire semester.

Getting The Word Out

Today we went around in Warwick, starting as close as possible to our bowling alley and posted flyers. Our goal was to get rid of all fifty flyers and post as many as possible. We are hoping to continue to get the word around by advertising way more. Simply blasting emails and getting the word out is what will hopefully get bodies at our event. We are going to go into overdrive meeting every day leading up to our event the week we get back from break. Last stretch, keep on going!

More Sponsors!! And our plan for the next week!

Our team has shifted its focus from sitting in our weekly meetings and planning our event to really get involved and getting things done. We’ve spent a lot of hours in the car driving between Warwick, East Providence and Cranston utilizing connections we’ve made. Being that none of us are from this area this initially seemed like to would be difficult, but if you read the previous posts, to our surprise we have found a lot of success!

Besides the list of sponsors from last week we are happy to announce a few more to our list!

Salon Valente                                     donated $25 gift card to our raffle.

Hooters                                                 donated 4 t-shirts, 4 coupons, 4 playing cards to our raffle

Character’s Café                                     donated $20 gift card to our raffle

Cameo Cakes                                     donated $25 gift card to our raffle

True Sent Candles                         donated a basket of candles to our raffle

Picasso’s Pizza Pub                         donated $50 gift card as well as a lane. They put up our table tents!

Faray Nails                                    donated $20 donation

Larry’s Liquors                                     donated a wine basket to our raffle.

Meadow Brook Lanes                        donated fountain soda and their facility as well

LDC                                                 donated $100 for sponsorship and possibly some jewelry

These are the places that we went to and immediately sponsored! There were many others that we went to that said they would give the proposal to their manager and get back to us! We are planning on returning to each of these places within the next week.

As Pat mentioned in the previous post, we met with Chris to get more flyers and deliver our donated items to his place. We were very excited to give him the fruits of our labor and get his feedback. He said we were doing a great job and he was impressed. As we were all sitting in the room feeling proud of ourselves for getting out there and securing all these sponsorships to my surprise Chris then told us we needed to double our efforts. His attitude reminded me of Tom. Never settle. Chris said over the next week we are going to have to meet many more times as well as doubling the results of sponsorship. I think his mindset comes from doing this before and understanding what’s involved with putting on an event of this magnitude. He knows just how to motivate us and always keeps our egos in balance by never letting us settle for anything. That’s not to say we don’t know how to motivate ourselves, Chris just knows how to play devils advocate by always finding a way to give us more motivation to better ourselves. So we are set up to “double down” our efforts and get way more sponsors. We always seem to find a new level of motivation after meeting with Chris.

I think for our team this is a really important step in the process because getting raffle items is really the only variable left in this process. Next week, our mindset will shift from getting sponsorship and raffle items to setting up logistics of how this event will be happening on that day. Who will be delivering the sponsor board and when? When will Sofia’s deliver the food and set up? How will the balloons be getting there and who will be there to receive them? There are so many of these types of questions that still needs to be worked out. All of our items are being donated and our expenses for this event are still $0!! That being said, it’s our reasonability to make sure all the donated items make their way to the bowling alley by April 27. All of these sorts of questions still need to be worked out and this is where we are headed next week after we secure our sponsorships.

We are also planning on doubling the amount of advertising we have been doing. We are printing hundreds of flyers and getting to local schools to get the word out there even more!

Getting more and more flyers and table tents!

Getting our flyers on as many surfaces as possible! Keep going and never stop until you can’t walk anymore!

APPLICATION APPLICATION APPLICATION! – Utilizing What We Learned In Networked!

We are very excited and proud to announce that we have the following sponsors donating to our event. We learned through the networks book to not be afraid of failing. The biggest take away from this book is to utilize the connections that you have! We were so surprised by how easy it was just to simply ask and therefore how many connections we were able to make. That was the most important part. Simply asking was crucial because if we never did that we would never have gotten sponsorship like this. The hardest part is getting in the mindset of asking as many people as possible and not being afraid of getting turned down because the worst-case scenario is you walk into the next business and try again. We are hoping to distribute more flyers on Friday 28th and continue to “hit up” local business for donations or pure sponsorship. We will be offering to put their logo on a sponsor board as well as over a bowling lane or on a table depending on the quantity of their donation. We want to continue with targeting local businesses because, as helpful as their sponsorship would be to us we are also hoping to help them advertize as well considering we hopefully will have anywhere between 250 and 500 people there!

We received official forms from Children’s Wishes to have a small business fill out when sponsoring us, which is really important. If you are going to try this, make sure you have a information sheet explaining the organization and what is you are doing as well as a form for them to fill out when donating money. Not only will this help you keep track, it also comes off as more professional and probably eliminate issues that might arise otherwise down the road. I urge everybody to apply what we’ve learned through networks and go out there and try it!! You’ll be surprised at how simple it is to ask a question and how responsive some businesses can be.

So far we have Cardi’s Funriture who has agreed to give us 2 $250 gift cards for our raffle. Sophia’s Tuscan Grille has committed to catering the entire event free of charge, which would have been an expense north of $200. East Commerce is also donating raffle items as well. Tech 911 is doing all of our printing and slide shows during the event as well as helping us organize the set up of the actual event. And of course Childrens Wishes are donating T’shirts, magnets, banners and more to help make our event personal and remind those of what this event is all about! We also have a DJ who is a connection we found through Tech 911 who has offered to DJ the entire event completely free of charge! We are extremely excited about our sponsors and cannot wait to add more to the list!

Also, be sure to check out our “What We’ve Raised Page” at the top of our home page next to our “About Us” page for updated info on our total amount of money collected thus far!
